Quebec works differently: trades are a nearly free DEP then a CCQ apprenticeship; college is a 3-year DEC at a cégep (tuition-free for residents); university is 3 years after a 2-year pre-university DEC. Numbers from IMT en ligne, CCQ, FIQ scales and the Relance surveys.

The picture

What the day-to-day isSwitching cars, operating trains with an engineer, safety-critical work outdoors in all weather.
What actually stops peopleRail companies hire in waves; you may wait a year for an intake. Medical and safety screening is strict.
The downsideOn call around the clock for the first years. Home life suffers until you have seniority.
If you're the parentAmong the highest-paid jobs with no post-secondary requirement. Seniority-based scheduling is brutal early on.
